How to Use LinkedIn AI Resume Builder?

In this tutorial, we will show you how to use LinkedIn resume builder features. These features exist right now inside the Job Board.

You have probably heard the rumors. “Just click the ‘Build a Resume’ button on your profile!”

You go to your profile. You click “More.” And… nothing. The button is gone.

That is because LinkedIn changed things. The old drag-and-drop resume builder is history. But the AI power is still there; it is just hiding in a different place.

Today, the real magic happens when you are looking at a job. LinkedIn now uses AI to scan your resume against specific job descriptions. It tells you exactly what keywords you are missing. It acts like a cheat sheet for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).

What Happened to the Old LinkedIn Resume Builder?

Before we start, let’s clear up the confusion. Does LinkedIn have an AI resume builder?

Technically, no longer a standalone document creator.

The feature that let you create a PDF from scratch on your profile page was discontinued.

Nonetheless, LinkedIn does have AI-powered resume feedback. This is arguably better.

Instead of just helping you format a document, it helps you beat the bot. It compares your profile to a job posting and highlights the gap between “what you have” and “what they want.”

Why You Should Care (The “Resume Gap” Reality)

Did you know that 75% of resumes are rejected before a human even sees them? This is because of the ATS software.

LinkedIn’s new AI tool is designed to solve this specific problem. It doesn’t just make your resume look pretty; it makes it readable.

  • It finds missing skills: It tells you, “This job needs Python, but you didn’t list it.”
  • It suggests keywords: It shows you the exact words the hiring manager used.
  • It helps you tailor: It gives you the data you need to edit your resume before you hit apply.

Step 1: Go to the “Jobs” Tab

You cannot access the new AI resume builder LinkedIn tools from your main profile anymore. You must start your journey in the Jobs section.

  1. Log in to LinkedIn.
  2. Click the “Jobs” icon (the briefcase) at the top of your screen.

  1. Search for a job you are interested in (e.g., “Marketing Manager”).

  1. Click on a specific job posting to open the details.

The main viewing pane displays the details for a "MERN Stack Developer Intern" position. Below the "Apply" button is a "Premium" section titled "Your AI-powered job assessment" offering interactive tools like "Show match details," "Tailor my resume," and "Create cover letter."

Step 2: Access “Resume Insights”

This is the hidden gem. First, go to a job posting page. Look for a section called “Resume Insights” or “Premium” features. These are often Premium features, but basic keyword matching is sometimes visible to all.

  1. Just below the Apply button, you’ll find options for an AI-powered job assessment. These include “Show match Details”, “Tailor my Resume”, “Create cover letter”, and “Help me stand out”.
A close-up screenshot of a LinkedIn job listing header for a "MERN Stack Developer Intern." Below the standard Apply and Save buttons, the premium "Your AI-powered job assessment" toolbar is prominently displayed, showcasing the AI assistance buttons available to the user.
  1. Want to see how well your profile fits an application? Just hit “Show match details.” A smart sidebar will pop up, letting you know what criteria you meet and what might be missing. If something’s missing, no sweat! Use the “Add skills to showcase your expertise” feature to quickly fill in those gaps.

On the right side, an open flyout panel details the user's skill match for the role, noting that they match 1 of 2 required qualifications. A red box highlights a prompt in the panel to "Add skills to showcase your expertise."
  1. Additionally, you may also utilize the “Help me stand out” feature, which offers suggestions to distinguish your application from others. And later adding it to your experience.

The right-hand panel displays AI-generated suggestions on how the user can improve their profile for this specific role, such as highlighting React.js skills and emphasizing relevant intern experience. A red box at the bottom of the panel highlights an "Add your experience" button.

Step 3: Use the “Tailor Resume” Feature

In some versions of LinkedIn (especially for Premium users applying via “Easy Apply”), you get a deeper AI tool.

  1. Click the “Tailor Resume” button.
  2. Upload your current resume PDF.

The left side of the screen displays a Premium badge and asks the user, "Which resume would you like to tailor?". The right side features a dark panel prompting the user to "Select a resume to begin," centered around a prominent blue "Upload resume" button that accepts PDF, DOC, or DOCX files up to a maximum size of 5MB.
  1. Look for a feature that says “Review your resume” or “Get AI feedback”.

The screen prompts the user with the question, "Which resume would you like to tailor?" alongside a stylized graphic of a hand holding a document. On the right side of the screen, a previously uploaded PDF file named "Avanti Sawant.pdf" is selected, with a blue "Next" button visible in the bottom right corner.
  1. The Analysis: The AI will read your uploaded PDF and compare it to the job description text.

A dark panel in the center of the screen displays a loading spinner next to the text "Reviewing job description...". Below this, a green checkmark next to "About the job" indicates that the AI has successfully analyzed the job listing and is preparing targeted feedback.
  1. The Feedback: It will give the missing skills or details mentioned in the job description.

The right-hand pane features a dedicated AI feedback panel that outlines key job qualifications and provides specific, actionable suggestions to enhance the resume. The AI specifically recommends adding concrete examples of Node.js and MongoDB experience to better match the hiring manager's requirements, even providing a suggested bullet point format.

Step 4: Edit Your Resume

Since LinkedIn removed the drag-and-drop editor, you need to fix your resume file yourself based on the AI’s advice.

  1. You can incorporate extra details. These include Experience, Skills, and similar information. Do this by selecting the “+” icon next to the respective section.

This allows the user to manually insert new roles or projects to directly address the AI's feedback shown in the right-hand panel.
  1. Rewrite Bullets: To guarantee your resume aligns with a job description, incorporate requested phrases directly. For example, if it requests “Cross-functional leadership,” or technical skills like Node.js, explicitly incorporate that phrase into one of your bullet points. A helpful feature is indicated by the star icons. It lets you easily rewrite or refine your existing statements for this purpose.

A red box highlights a specific AI "Rewrite" button, denoted by a sparkle icon, which appears next to the section header. This feature offers the user automated, one-click assistance to dynamically improve their summary text.

The modal allows the user to manage their listed proficiencies, displaying current selections like React.js, Node.js, Python, and SQL as easily removable tags. A prominent blue "Save" button is located at the bottom right of the window.
  1. Upon completion of your edits, you may preview and download your AI-tailored suggested resume from the right-hand sidebar.

  1. Upload Resume: Following the download, please upload this resume to the application upon clicking ‘apply’.

The file is named to match the specific job application, "Resume-Avanti-Sawant-Wake-Up-Whistle (1).pdf," and displays a cleanly formatted, single-page resume containing all the updated sections for Summary, Experience, Education, and Skills.

The “Enhance Profile” Trick

If you don’t want to upload a file every time, you can use AI to rewrite your LinkedIn profile. Then export that as a resume.

  1. Go to your profile.
  2. Click the “Pencil Icon” on your “About” or “Headline” section.

Inside the text box, a prominent "Write with AI" button is visible, indicating a Premium feature designed to help generate a more impactful headline.
  1. Look for the “Rewrite with AI” button (Premium feature).

The headline has been dynamically updated to "Web Development Intern @ WISE | Web Design, Web Development". Below the text box, interface options to "Show option 2" or "Revert" are visible, allowing the user to cycle through different AI-generated choices before hitting save.
  1. The AI will draft a professional summary for you using keywords that recruiters love.

  1. Once your profile is updated, click the “More” button at the top of your profile and select “Save to PDF”.
